ITALIAN VERSION

TORINO – The electric quadricycle Mole Urbana arrives within the year. The project of the designer Umberto Palermo, who designed the quadricycle, is well advanced and, when the Covid-19 emergency is over, production will begin. The first prototypes are ready and the objectives have been outlined: to produce 50 pieces by this year, another 150 in 2021, to reach 200 in 2022 and 300 in 2023. The quadricycles market growth estimate is 30% for 2030 : Mole Urbana aims to reach around 2% in three years and 6% in six years.

The baby city car Mole Urbana will be produced and electrified in Tuscany by Pretto, in Pontedera, which already works for Piaggio, the Chinese Dongfeng and the Japanese Isuzu. According to Alessandro Pretto: “The innovation of new electrified systems sets us the goal of satisfying the ever-increasing requests for electric vehicles.”

Umberto Palermo also involved three Turin companies: the supply of aluminum to Ett1 and the distribution and rental will be entrusted to Movim, a leading company in long-term rental.

“More and more the concept of individual ownership is supported and in some areas replaced by innovative rental formulas, which can meet the needs of the user.” Antonino Mogavero, owner of Movim, says.

Orienting projects by virtue of social changes is a duty for those who have made creativity a profession. Umberto Palermo observes: “We will start again from a different perspective than a few weeks ago. The development of one off Mole Costruzione Artigianale aimed at the dream of a few, we will now add the ingenuity to create a vehicle useful to many. The goal of Mole Urbana – says Palermo – is to take advantage of the growing demand for quadricycles by positioning itself as a cool brand, so as to create a market niche that can, over time, grow, becoming a reference for style and flexibility.

I didn’t want to design a miniature car, but a system that can be integrated into the city, which is shaped by new needs. I want to define Mole Urbana as a ‘people mover’ integrated in the world of transport, from public ones to car sharing “.

To see and try Mole Urbana you will have to wait for the Covid-19 emergency to end.

“We will show the prototypes at the Milano-Monza Open Air Motor Show, which is currently confirmed pending to see how the situation will evolve. We will guide the prototypes and organize a press conference, with the hope that this outdoor, joyful place will give us back the joy of being together, “says Palermo.

THE QUADRICYCLES MARKET

The quadricycle market has grown a lot in recent years and reached 9,000 (non-electric) parts four years ago. Then there was a collapse in sales, but thanks to electrification, the segment has now resumed its run. In the first half of 2019 in Europe the growth of sales of electric vehicles was 70% compared to the same period of the previous year: 35,810 compared to 21,062 in 2018. These are mainly scooters and mopeds (28,577), while 5,812 are motorcycles and 1,500 quadricycles. For now, the quadricycle is therefore a niche product, but the estimate is a growth of 30% per year. Among the large groups that have bet on this category is Citroen which recently launched the Ami electric quadricycle, presented at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show. Jaguar Land Rover also recently presented the new concept vehicle Project Vector, an electric vehicle for urban mobility.

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF MOLE URABANA

Mole Urbana is 100% electric. The shapes are seductive: a bodywork of the early ‘900 models and futuristic shapes. It is built with aluminum profiles and is inspired by the window frames of skyscrapers.

As for clothing, it will have different sizes, Small, Medium, Large and XL: it can have, in fact, one to three seats. One of the versions will be designed for those not yet of age.

The measures are: the SMALL is 3.2 meters long, 1.49 meters wide and 1.4 meters high. The MEDIUM has a length of 3.4 meters, a width of 1.49 meters and a height of 1.4 meters. The LARGE is instead 3.7 meters long, 1.49 meters wide and 1.20 meters high.

The car goes from a minimum of 75 km of autonomy up to 150 km depending on the batteries. The speed adapts to the regulation of the Municipalities, therefore it does not exceed 50 km per hour.

Mole Urbana is also equipped with an electric scooter for each passenger, which is recharged through to the dynamos connected to the wheels of the quadricycle, in order to better face the city routes. The interiors are modular. The steering wheel is a cloche like that of an airplane, the seats are high, the dashboard is made of pressed cardboard pockets where you can easily store objects and shopping bags. Also pay attention to safety: for fourteen-year-olds there will be an App that will monitor how you drive which will also allow you to have a rental rate that varies according to the driving mode.
